Useful beliefs

My pet theory is that 50% of the beliefs that each person holds are actively working against them, in one way or another. It has been true for me.

Rather than spend the bottom half of my life chasing the elusive "right beliefs," I have begun to accept that no estimation of how life, the world, or people work can ever be perfect.

Instead, I've decided to focus on swapping out my beliefs and perspectives as necessary, examining them agains the lens of utility, asking, "Is this helping me live the way I want, or not?"

Even if I hold something so strongly to be true, maybe because my parents or family have preached it, or the whole world is taking turns shouting it and reflexively patting each other on the back, or because it's just "self-evident" –

– if it's holding me back, I know I MUST cast it aside.
